Plymouth is a brilliant place to be a student, with Dartmoor on your doorstep, Cornwall just over there, and yet all the big names and brands you could ask for, just within walking distance. From shopping and dining to surfing and sailing, there are plenty of things to do when you get a break from studying – so here are a few suggestions to get you going!
1. Roam around Dartmoor
Dartmoor is so wild and beautiful, it’s easy to forget you’re just outside Plymouth! Home to a ruggedly beautiful landscape of granite tors, open plains and thick woodland, there are also wild ponies roaming these famous moors. Wild ponies!
There are plenty of ways to access Dartmoor – by bus, taking the X39 to Burrator Reservoir; you can get reasonably close by taking the train to Ivybridge or Totnes (though you might want to bring a bike), or of course driving if you’re lucky enough to have a car (and if you do, we have properties with car parking spaces – just ask!).
2. Have a picnic on the Hoe, then take a boat taxi across to Mountbatten for a pint
There are few sights as glorious as The Hoe on a sunny day. Your time at Plymouth University won’t be complete without having had a picnic here. Then, why not take the Mount Batten Ferry from the Barbican to Mount Batten to watch the sun set with a pint in your hand? The ferry leaves every half an hour, costs just £1.50, and takes just a few minutes.
3. Drake Circus student nights
In September each year, special “student nights” are held at Drake Circus. With a valid NUS card, you’ll find yourself exclusive offers from some of the biggest brands. You can also check out our Unity Card for amazing offers and discounts year round!
4. The Immersive Vision Theatre
The Immersive Vision Theatre is “a transdisciplinary instrument for the manifestation of material and imaginary worlds”. Sounds pretty amazing, right? This low-key little building is located on Plymouth University’s campus and looks a bit like an old schoolhouse from a time long past, but on the inside it’s dizzying brilliant and a host to a multitude of fantastic shows.
5. The Secret Balcony of Win on the top floor of the Rolle Building
Have you been up here yet? There’s a magnificent view across Plymouth Sound, and hardly anyone seems to go up there. Plymouth University’s best kept secret? Check it out (if you can find it, hiding in plain sight).
6. Have a great big freakin’ house party!
We have student properties to suit everyone of any budget. If you want to party, we check out our houses with gardens and huge spacious living rooms to entertain. If you prefer something quieter, we have smaller places available with cosy rooms where you’ll feel right at home.
