You’ve got some free time at university after studying hard and want to find something fun to do, where do you go? Plymouth has many attractions and events on all year round and Unity Lets have picked out 10 of the best things to do for local students as well as visiting friends and family.

1. Cinemas

You have two options if you want to watch the latest movies – Vue or Reel. Choosing between them is usually a case of looking at your student bank account. Vue is in the centre of a large leisure park and comes with 14 screens totalling around 3,300 seats. There’s places to eat just a few metres either side of the cinema including Nando’s and Frankie & Benny’s as well as a gym and a bowling alley. All of this does come at a price with tickets on the expensive side but it can be worth it if your student loan has just come in.

Reel is hidden away slightly behind Theatre Royal and Union Street but prices are cheap making it attractive for bargain-hunting students. With the price, you’ll get a smaller screen and less variety on times but the staff are great and it’s a nice alternative to have.

2. The Hoe

When the sun’s out, you can be sure a large amount of the student population will be found on the Hoe, Plymouth’s beach alternative. There’s a big expanse of grass next to a lighthouse overlooking the sea and it’s a great place to relax and enjoy what warm weather that we get. The Hoe is also host to a number of events including concerts and fireworks so be sure to keep an eye out for when those events come around.

3. The National Marine Aquarium

The aquarium is one of the biggest attractions not only in Plymouth but also the whole of Devon. You can find it not far from the Barbican and prices are reasonable for a day out. The National Marine Aquarium is home to the most species of sharks and rays in the UK and there’s plenty of events and special days held there. Definitely a place worth seeing during your time in Plymouth.

4. Bars & Clubs

One of the best parts of Fresher’s Week is finding all the bars and clubs worth visiting in Plymouth. You’ll also find that many societies will run pub crawls if you’re looking for a bit of structure to your evening. We’ve given you a brief overview of some of the main ones below if you’re really not sure where to go and when:

  • James Street Vaults – Plymouth Uni campus pub with a Tuesday quiz and Wednesday open mic night.
  • Switch – Previously known as Bang Bang, coffee shop from 10am, drinks bar in the early evening and a club running through until 6am. £1 a pint on Monday and 2 for 1 drinks every day from 6pm to 11pm.
  • The Roundabout – All the latest sports events plus pub quizzes on Sunday and cheap cocktails on Tuesday.
  • Cuba – Opposite Plymouth Uni, 2 for 1 drinks on Tuesday and £1 a pint on Friday.
  • The Mousetrap – Pub quiz on Sunday, £1 a pint on Thursday.

5. Eating Out

There’s loads of places to check out if you’re looking for cheap places to eat out. Goodbody’s offer a cooked breakfast and some of the biggest milkshakes you’ll ever see! By the time you leave, that hangover will be all but completely cured. Bar Burritos on the Barbican offers a similar experience to Chipotle and there’s loads of phone chargers available if you’re running low.

6. Saltram House and Gardens

Although Saltram House is located on the outskirts of Plymouth, it feels like you’re in a completely different place when you visit. 500 acres of grounds and a lovely Georgian mansion make for a great insight into country estate life through the years. There are many impressive interiors as well as ceramics and paintings to look at. Saltram estate is great for walking with plenty of paths and greenery around.
